New Update: Baby Girl Dies Following School Bus Crash That Killed Mother In Yaphank

A 1-year-old girl has died following a crash involving a school bus on Long Island that also claimed the life of the child's 31-year-old mother.

Emergency crews in Yaphank were called at around 7:30 a.m. Thursday, May 4, with reports of a crash involving a school bus on County Road 101 near the Long Island Expressway, Suffolk County Police told Daily Voice.

According to investigators, Jacklyn Smolian, of East Patchogue, was driving northbound on County Road 101 when the southbound bus attempted to make a left turn onto Express Drive South.

The two vehicles collided, with the impact knocking the bus onto its side.

Smolian was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

Shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday, Suffolk County Police announced that her daughter had also died from her injuries at Stony Brook University Hospital.

The driver of the school bus, 73-year-old Jose Ducos, of Medford, along with a 61-year-old female passenger, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

There were no children on the bus at the time of crash.

County Road 101 was closed for several hours while crews investigated the incident. It has since reopened to traffic.
